Another Sunday, another room full of people bringing unfinished ideas, half-built stories and projects they really want to make happen.

This week we had sci-fi, a story about a teacher facing some difficult choices, and plenty of conversations about what it actually takes to get a short film from a script to a real shoot.

🎤 Pitches

First up was a sci-fi short set almost entirely in one intimate location: a kind of “conscious world.”

The 20 to 30-minute film takes some inspiration from Inception, Ex Machina, Blade Runner and Elysium, but the approach is much more grounded. The script is already there and still being refined.

The team is looking for actors, including a painter, an algorithm, doctors and younger characters, as well as a producer, wardrobe/makeup, music, sound and an editor. And importantly, the project is open to people who are still learning and looking for their first chances to work on a film.

We also heard about a short film following a teacher who catches a student with drugs.

Instead of reporting him, the teacher decides to protect the student's future. But when drugs later turn up in the school office, it becomes clear that looking away hasn't solved anything.

The idea is to explore how one small compromise can lead to another, with the consequences getting more serious each time.

The project is still at an early stage, with the script being developed and no crew, locations or director attached yet. But the good news? It could potentially be shot in just two days if the locations are close together.

The Screenwriters Focus Group is back from its summer break on September 20th at 3 PM at Workish.

Screenwriting's on the Wall returns on September 22nd and will meet every Tuesday at 7 PM at Motel One Hackischer Markt.
